Studio Visit with
Tom Bell

Tom Bell is a good pal of ours here at INF DEF, moving down from Wellington a few years back we think he’s worked his way into our local CHCH community pretty perfectly, often frequenting our Friday beers and numerous other INF DEF events. He's a bit of a wizard when it comes to painting, graphic design, and illustration. If you haven’t seen his work out in the wild yet we have a bit of a sneak peek below of Tom in his studio working hard on his new show Adoration that’s opening at Absolution in the Arts Centre on the 7th of August.

I am...

I am a designer and artist originally from Wellington. I’ve spent the last 4 years in Christchurch applying my trade as a graphic designer and after a long hiatus I returned to painting last year as a creative outlet. Pushing myself to experiment outside of my comfort zone and learn new some techniques.

Tell us about your upcoming exhibition at Absolution...

My show Adoration pays homage to my main artist influence of Japanese tattoo iconography and is a reflection of my time in Christchurch

What inspires your style of working

There are many influences in my work: architecture, modern design, street art, and tattooing to name a few. Different textures found in our everyday environments also play an important role.

Favourite local spots in CHCH?

Spots that I like to hit in CHCH include checking out new shows at Absolution, Fiksate, and the Christchurch Art Gallery. Hitting Child Sister for a breakfast sando, and grabbing a coffee from Unknown Chapter or C1

If a package arrived on your doorstep from INF DEF what would be in it?

For people that know me, I pretty much live in black all year round. I allow myself to ‘flex’ when it comes my footwear and socks though. Lou slims from Neuw are a great staple to have in your wardrobe. A tee from Stan Ray, the Linen Shirt from Commoners (they crush it when it comes to simplicity) and the Denim Sherpa from Rolla's to to top it off. For my footwear you can’t go wrong with The Dellow Canvas from Stepney Workers Club.

Rad stuff only.
