ASHY is an effervescent pop artist & songwriter hailing from New Zealand. She’s a musical chameleon, delving into sub-genres of R&B, dance and contemporary sounds, and is known for her incredibly polished production, shimmering vocals, and catchy melodies.
We asked ASHY to make us a Local Mix and shot through some quick questions in celebration of the second week of NZ music Month. The result is a mix packed full of early influences, devastating hooks, and certified bangers. This is best listened to on long drives or screaming in your bedroom (or from the rooftops).
Tell us a little about how you approached making this mix — what was your jumping off point?
I firstly went with current inspirations and then as I started sifting through songs I thought it’d be nice to let the audience in on some of my early influences or songs I’ve loved for a very long time.
Talk us through the flow of the mix, what is the ideal listening environment?
The mix does take you through a lot of different genres and moods, I would probably say in the car or on a long drive. Because there’s songs in there you will be belting and some you just want to listen to in silence with your car radio bass booming.
Describe the kind of music you usually gravitate towards, do you listen to the same kind of music that you make or are those things separate for you?
I love a good beat, hooky melodies - something I can grab onto as a listener. I also really like music that creates its ‘own’ world, almost cinematic or I can picture it in my head. I would say those attributes defiently can be found in my music, especially the new stuff that will be coming out.
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think that inform your sound? (Could be an artist, an era, a place etc)
I’m hugely inspired by the 90’s and early 2000’s songs, naturally music I grew up with. Making this playlist, I underestimated how much I do love a good live band sound; eg. Hella Good by No Doubt. I also just love that music was ‘big’ and ‘confident’ especially with pop eg. Britney Spears.
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think inform your aesthetic?
I love chords/production that informs you how to feel as a listener. The music I’m currently creating definitely falls within that. I've created a world with my music and that’s always a place I wanted to get to as an artist. To know myself well enough artistically to have a sonic ‘aesthetic’ or true ‘ASHY’ sound.
Are there broader ideas of design that are influencing you at the moment? (i.e. books you've read, architecture, a perfect mug, iconic period, fashion hero)
Well I just watched Coachella on the live stream and I have come away completely obsessed with Gwen Stefani again, I loved her stage looks for those performances! She’s also an incredible songwriter that I’ve admired for most of my life and to know she has written so many hits is mind blowing. In her main era of the 90’s/2000’s - that period of time was so bold and interesting fashion wise and music wise. People weren’t afraid to push the envelope, someone else who really inspired me recently was Chappell Roan. Her Coachella set was iconic!
Who would you invite to Friday beers... (living or passed, famous or non-famous)?
I just HAVE to know what Taylor Swift is like as a person, if I could have a chance to sit down with her in a comfortable and chill environment I think all my questions could be answered haha. Also I think we’d switch out the beer for a good few wines.
What's your go to performance look or formula for a look?
I tend to pick matching sets if I can, usually some sort of crop top and a miniskirt. I also wear sparkly black fishnets and Dr Martens a lot. I also have to put on my lashes and my winged eyeliner to really feel like ‘ASHY’.
What is your favourite item of clothing you've ever owned, or an item that you have a strong memory of?
I have this Ksubi knit sweater, it’s black and has a metal hook and bar hardware detachable sleeves. So it can become a vest if you wanted it to be. I also love my Dr Martens that have a school girl vibe but have a little baby pink on them.
Have you got anything coming up that we can help boost/ anything else we should know?
I’m opening for Drax Project on June 29th at the Christchurch Town Hall, be there! We’re gonna be putting on such a fun show and there’s a lot of other local acts on the lineup too.

ASHY's INF DEF selections:
I chose all items because they’re a little ‘off center’ or have a little color. Inspired by my 90’s/2000s influences. I like at least one item I wear to be considered bold or to draw attention.
1. Permanent Vacation
Impression Lace Cardigan - Deep
I would style the blue cardigan with a skirt and the blue sneakers with a little white ankle sock. Or the blue cardigan with the white pants (purple tint) and the blue sneakers. Can be elevated with the green sunglasses.
2. Wynn Hamlynn
Bertie Jackt - WH Custom Check
I would style the tartan look with a heavy necklace and black loafers.
3. Twenty-Seven Names
The Oracle Vest - Grass
Would pair with a mini skirt or dark jeans and mens style shirt underneath and a chunky silver chain necklace.
4. Akila
Lizard x KkCo - Green
Would pair this with the Permanent Vacation denim bustier outfit to elevate the look.
5. Permament Vacation
Repose Denim Bustier - Purple tint
Would work well with my skin tone and can be dressed up or down.
