Local Mix 012 —
Jess B
Hip Hop
Rap
Alternative
Jess B is most definitely New Zealand's answer to Missy Elliot. Her colourful mix of hip hop, groove and dancehall sounds is mirrored in her bold and bright approach to fashion. We got Jess to make us a playlist and answer a few questions before her upcoming show in Christchurch this month!
I am...
a rapper from Auckland City. I was born in Auckland but I am of Kenyan and NZ Irish descent. Been rapping since high school but have been doing gigs and pursuing as a career for 3 years now.
My favourite brands are...
I love 90’s brands such as FUBU and Roc-A-Wear as well as vintage sports brands. Most of what I wear is pre-worn and actually comes from op-shops or online! I don’t often buy brand new clothes.
My idea behind the mix...
This mix has no theme , no rhyme or reason, other than being a bunch of songs that I listen to or like!! I just went with the flow as I was adding songs to this. No planning involved. I have quite a wide range of genres that I like, but dancehall, afro-beats and hip-hop are my favourites.
My favourite spot in Christchurch...
I don’t actually have a favourite spot in CHCH yet that I could think of off the top of my head — I think that must mean that I need to come down and visit more!!
A trend I'm really into at the moment...
Co-ordinate sets! Matching tops and pants / shorts. It's easy fashion and my favourite ones are usually super bright and patterned, so they are perfect for wearing on stage.
Five people you'd invite to Friday Beers at Infinite Definite...
Missy Elliot
Rihanna
Amanda Seales
Kehlani
Megan Thee Stallion
My fashion icons...
Rihanna …. I don’t really feel like I need to add anyone else, but special mentions include;
Teyanna Taylor
Da Brat (in the 90’s)
Tyler the Creator
ASAP Rocky
My go to performance outfit...
I’ve never worn the same outfit twice… YET! ;)
I like bold clothes on stage - to be as eye catching as possible - so usually go for bright oversize hockey jerseys , matching sets and colourful bombers.
