Tell us a little about how you approached making this mix — what was your jumping off point?
Playlists were a big part of my childhood. Either I was dubbing stuff off the radio onto a cassette on my stereo (is my age showing?!) or I was listening to the tapes Dad would have made for our family road trips. I was gonna make a regular ol’ playlist of what I’ve been listening to at the moment, but I thought it would be a fun experiment to document the music I was listening to when I was a kid until now. So I must say, this playlist is eclectic AF!! It’s a real mixed bunch. And mostly all stuff I still listen to to this day!
Talk us through the flow of the mix, what is the ideal listening environment?
I’ve timelined all the tracks from my youngest age through to my oldest - you can hear how my tastes have changed (or not). I reckon this would be pretty dang good if you’re travelling or if you’re wanting to lie down and let your mind wander a bit…maybe not so great for relaxing!?!? Or hanging out with grandma (unless she doesn’t mind an F bomb).
Describe the kind of music you usually gravitate towards, do you listen to the same kind of music that you make or are those things separate for you?
As you will guess from my playlist, I am sort of all over the place with my music taste! So the music I make is influenced by whatever I think serves the story of the song that I’m trying to tell at the time. Or what I am currently inspired by! I tend to cherry-pick moments that pique some interest or emotion in me - this can be the way an artist sings a line or a snare or kick sound in the production etc - and then I funnel that inspiration into the writing/production sessions with Emily (C. Browning).
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think that inform your sound? (Could be an artist, an era, a place etc)
As a theatre kid and ex actor, my aesthetic definitely leans towards the dramatic and theatrical! And it tends to shift to serve whatever the story is I am trying to tell visually, in support of what I’m working on/releasing at the time.
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think inform your aesthetic?
Not really...although it can be fun to dip into the Y2K aesthetic that's really prevalent at the moment as a "costume" - it's mega weird seeing people wearing bootleg low-rise jeans unironically after experiencing that the first time.
Who would you invite to Friday beers or a Sunday morning cuppa tea... (living or passed, famous or non-famous)?
Both of my grandmother's died when I was really young, so I would love to sit and chat with them and have the time to get to know them.
What's your go to performance look or formula for a look?
Big hair, a fierce beat, something dramatic and fun and a touch camp, that I can move in (I move around a lot)!l
What is your favourite item of clothing you've ever owned, or an item that you have a strong memory of?
When I was in my 20s, my mum let me wear this amazing bright blue and silver hand beaded/sequined top she bought when she was travelling through Turkey in the late 80s- coincidentally when she was pregnant with me! I have many fond memories of whipping it out and wearing it for a night in town - though I had no idea how to style it at the time, I thought I was hot sh*t!
Have you got anything coming up that we can help boost/ anything else we should know?
I have a song coming out on May 9th called It’s My Pleasure! Along with a music vid! So keep an eye out for that…
