Her debut EP, Emotional Affair, delved into Jensen's experiences of heartbreak and intense periods of self-reflection. The lead single,"Germaphobe," particularly struck a chord, amassing over a million streams and achieving viral success across social media platforms.
Continuing to write, record, and tour across Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia, Mim Jensen's musical odyssey has seen her share stages with indie-rock stalwarts such as The Beths, Teenage Dads, The Rubens, Great Gable, The Butlers, and Bob Mould.
Tell us a little about how you approached making this mix — what was your jumping off point?
My jumping-off point was to chuck a bunch of songs I’ve been loving recently together. I like listening to music when I’m doing stuff around the house, or driving, so I generally make playlists that are appropriate for most listening environments. I also like playlists that take you on a bit of a sonic journey.
Talk us through the flow of the mix, what is the ideal listening environment?
I feel like this playlist is best listened to either by yourself or with your best pal driving around the hills together.
Describe the kind of music you usually gravitate towards, do you listen to the same kind of music that you make or are those things separate for you?
I generally gravitate towards angsty or sad music but I love a wide range of music, it’s really dependent on my mood. I just like music that makes me feel something or inspires me. I do write a lot of angsty music so that kinda checks out.
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think that inform your sound? (Could be an artist, an era, a place etc)
Fleetwood Mac, Tori Amos, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Mazzy Star.. and weirdly Solid Gold FM because it was always blasting in my grandparents house.
What are the touchstones that you refer back to that you think inform your aesthetic?
I feel like I’m still exploring my aesthetic. I love 90’s fashion and have always felt inspired by that fashion era - especially the grungier looks. I grew up watching a lot of 90’s cinema and I’ve always loved that time period. I like fashion that interplays with the feminine and masculine/light and dark.
Who would you invite to Friday beers or a Sunday morning cuppa tea... (living or passed, famous or non-famous)?
It’s got to be Jeff Buckley. I’d love to sit down with him with a glass of red and pick his brains on songwriting, what inspired him, his philosophy and maybe if there was time to craft a song together.
What's your go to performance look or formula for a look?
I like to keep it simple-ish because there’s already so much I have to think about on the day, so I generally go for a dress that I feel confident in and that is easy to move and jump around in!
What is your favourite item of clothing you've ever owned, or an item that you have a strong memory of?
My vintage denim jacket! I wear it almost everyday. It has all these sick patches on it and I love it to death. I’ll keep it forever or pass it down. I got it for $40 off Wet Rat and it is, in my opinion, the greatest steal in history.
Have you got anything coming up that we can help boost/ anything else we should know?
I’m touring my EP “Shadow Of The Gift” in May, playing in Christchurch at Space Academy on May 16th and Dunedin at Pearl Diver on May 24th!
