Ōtautahi-based band, Kool Aid make the kind of jangly pop music that will most likely inspire you to dance in your bedroom alone. Frontwoman, Violet French has filled us in on some of her style icons, some of her favourite spots to hang out around town and more. She's also blessed us with a brand new playlist. We're so very lucky. If you're on the hunt for a soundtrack to summer with just a hint of gloom, you're in the right place.
I am...
the lead singer of Kool Aid, a CHCH based indie rock group. Currently on the local label Melted Ice Cream until a big deal comes along!! We're a five piece band with members from all over the country, and world, but have all been Christchurch-based for the better part of a decade.
My favourite brands are...
I am a huge op shopper, so anything goes! In saying that, I am a huge advocate for the local designer 6X4, as well as the classics like Nom*D, Zambesi and a bit of Kowtow.
My favourite spots in Christchurch...
Smash Palace (obviously!), Denny's after dark, and what started out as an ironic appreciation has turned into a genuine love for Rockpool/Micky Finn's! Have a blat on the pool tables, soak up the ambience. They are two establishments that anyone, and everyone can go to... and they do!
My fashion icons...
Princess Diana. What a lady. Also, Courtney Love, I get behind a bit of a flaming dumpster fire. The classic Motown groups of the 60's and 70's; matching suits, sparkling dresses, big hair. Lastly, but not least of all; Jayne Mansfield!!!
My go-to performance outfit...
there are too many great performance looks to pick just one, I'll leave it to you to choose!
The idea behind the mix...
A collaborative effort from the band. A bunch of tunes which have various influences or just stuff we're listening to at the moment.
Kool Aid have recently released the Family Portrait EP which is available on Bandcamp and to purchase on cassette at Ride On Super Sound above Smash Palace.
